How to Make Tongs
by Caroline Kaora
I will tell you how you make tongs. Tongs are very important for us village people because they are so useful.
You must go into the bush and find a good piece of bamboo and cut it down. Once you have cut your tree, carry it to home. Next you make a fire. Next you take your bamboo and cut it into two pieces.
Split them in half, making four pieces. Then you compare your pieces to make sure they are the same and a good size to make tongs.
You must flatten the bamboo by taking out the ridges as well as make the ends smooth and rounded. Then you hold it in the fire. It should be high up in the flames so that you heat it but do not burn it. This will make it malleable.
Once it is hot, you bend the piece in half and tie it shut with a vine. Once it is tied well, put it in a place where it can sit in the smoke for a few days.
After it has sat in the smoke for three or four days, you can take it out and use it.
These tongs are used for holding very hot things, such as embers and coals, motu stones, or food that is too hot to touch.
Tongs are very important to us village people. They are not something we buy, but something we make in the village. And that is how to make tongs.
