The Bird and the Crab
by Patson Oniwana
I am going to tell you a story about two things, a bird called Ao and a crab called Kokosu. These two lived on an island. The bird lived on one point of the island, and the crab lived on the other side of the island.
One day, Bird thought to himself, “I am going to go see Crab and tell him that one day we should race around the island.”
So Bird went to go see Crab and told him, “Hey, I would like to race you around the island.” Crab replied, “Okay.” The two of them decided to race on Saturday.
While waiting for Saturday to come, Crab went around the island and told some of his crab friends that he and Bird were going to race around the island on Saturday. He put his crab friends at all the different checkpoints. And he told them, “When Bird reaches your checkpoint, and he shouts to find me, call back to him and say, ‘I’m here!’”
When he was done, Crab went home. On Saturday, Bird came to Crab and said “Hello. Here I am. Let’s get ready to race now!” Crab replied, “Alright, let’s go race,” and they went to the starting place.
Bird flew ahead; Crab crawled along behind. When Bird arrived at the first checkpoint, he called out for Crab. Crab’s friend called out, “I’m here!”. Then Bird flew to the next checkpoint and shouted again for Crab. Crab’s friend shouted back, “I’m here!”
Bird flew on, and when he reached the third checkpoint, he called out again. Crab’s friend called back, “I’m here!” And the race continued - Bird flying and Crab crawling along slowly. When Bird reached the fourth checkpoint, he shouted again, “Crab, where are you?” And Crab replied, “I’m here!”
So Bird said to himself, “Wow, I did not think Crab could run around the island well, but he beat me!” Crab just listened and laughed. The End.
